Lawrence Ray Filiberto, formerly of eastern Long Island and most recently of Horry County, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 16th, after a long illness. He was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed.
Born and raised on Long Island, Larry built a distinguished first career as an investment banker, beginning at FSA in Manhattan, continuing with Emerald First Financial in Minnesota, and ultimately returning to FSA in New York. Following the events of 9/11, Larry felt called to a new purpose. In 2005, he enrolled at Cooley Law School in Michigan, where he earned his law degree and passed the Michigan Bar. Soon after, he relocated to South Carolina, passed the bar there, and began a meaningful second career in the practice of law.
Larry served the people of Horry County as a prosecuting attorney until 2011, when he transitioned into private practice and also shared his knowledge with students as a professor at Coastal Carolina University. He approached every chapter of his career with dedication, integrity, and a genuine desire to help others.
Though a private person by nature, Larry touched countless lives with his kindness, intelligence, and quiet compassion. His absence will be felt deeply by all who knew him.
He is survived by his beloved siblings: Mark and his spouse Ruth, James and his spouse Laura, Richard and his spouse Grace, and his sister JoAnn. He also leaves behind many cherished friends and extended family members who will hold his memory close.
Services will be held on Saturday, November 22nd, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Commack Abbey.
Larry’s family invites all who knew him to come celebrate his life, honor his journey, and share in remembering the warmth he brought into the world.
